H2H Energy’s long-standing partnership with Toyota Australia has supported the development and operation of the Altona Hydrogen Centre and helped advance practical hydrogen mobility and refuelling capability in Australia.
H2H Energy recently visited Toyota Australia's Hydrogen Centre and refuelling facility at Altona, Victoria, reconnecting with one of Australia's most significant hydrogen infrastructure projects and reflecting on a long-standing relationship that has supported Toyota's hydrogen journey for many years. The Toyota Hydrogen Centre was first announced in 2019 and the hydrogen production, storage and refuelling facility was officially unveiled in2021 as Victoria's first commercial-grade permanent hydrogen production and refuelling station.
The Altona facility was developed as part of Toyota Australia's transformation of its former manufacturing site into a Centre of Excellence, incorporating hydrogen production, storage, vehicle refuelling and education capabilities to demonstrate the role hydrogen can play in future transport and energy systems.
H2H has been involved with the project since its development phase, providing support from concept through to implementation. This included detailed civil, mechanical and electrical design support, component procurement assistance, HAZOP participation, safety reviews and broader technical input associated with the development of the facility.
Over the years, H2H has continued to support Toyota across a range of hydrogen activities beyond the Altona site. These activities have included remote vehicle refuelling operations, commissioning support for mobile hydrogen refuellers, operational procedures and manual development, technical reviews, and practical assistance associated with hydrogen mobility deployments throughout Australia.
The relationship spans well over a decade and reflects a shared commitment to demonstrating practical hydrogen applications in the Australian market. During this time, Toyota has established itself as one of Australia's most active proponents of hydrogen mobility, using the Altona Hydrogen Centre to demonstrate hydrogen production, storage and refuelling technologies while supporting the deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles including the Toyota Mirai and other fuel-cell applications.
The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the continued development of Australia's hydrogen industry and the lessons learned through the planning, construction and operation of one of the country's flagship hydrogen refuelling facilities. The project remains an important example of how industry participants, technology providers and end users can work together to advance hydrogen infrastructure and capability in Australia.
